There's this businessman who happens to look down at the sidewalk one day. He sees a penny lying there on the curb. Nice bright shiny penny. Reminds him of what his grandfather used to say and all... So he bends down and picks it up. Just then, a guy in the car next to the curb decides to open the door suddenly. BAM! Knocks the business man on his butt! He sees stars he was hit so hard. He's sitting there, shaking his head, and some punk kid on a skateboard rolls up and steals his briefcase!

So our hapless gentleman gets up and starts running after the skateboarder with the briefcase. Shoving through people, his coat catches on something, tears, and he ends up tripping and falling into a nasty dirty puddle he doesn't want to think about. The skateboarder was long gone by then.

He manages to make it to his office, where he relates is tale of woe to his secretary. She gives it rapt attention, her eyes widening with each new hazard, until he comes to the end. In his right hand , he help up a shiny new penny, gazed at it for a moment and said, "And it was all because of this!"

"I'll say it was," cried the secretary, "if you hadn't found that Lucky Penny, you could have been killed!"

This story is interesting, and could even be considered somewhat amusing until you start looking at it as an allegory for the Democratic party. Think about it. Consider tour businessman to be the Democrats. And the penny? Jack Abramoff. The secretary is the public. The Dems are walking along one day and they see this bright, shiny scandal just waiting to be plucked. But can they convert it to something useful? No!

Why is that? The press, gun shy from years of false claims of bias made by the right, has become so obssessed with "fairness" that it is reporting the story as though the money Abramoff distributed went to Democrats as well as Republicans. And the public is buying it. No matter how many charts and graphs are offered, nobody is getting the point that Abramoff only gave money to Republicans because every story ends with the Indian tribes giving money to Democrats.

Here's how it went. Abramoff used dummy corporations to contribute to Republicans. He swindled the some Indian tribes. The same Tribes gave money to Republicans and to Democrats. That money didn't come from Abramoff. Abramoff was taking money from the Tribes, not laundering it through them.

What the Democrats have to do is realize that there are a lot of pennies out there right now -- not just a few lucky ones. Keep pushing on this to get the right story out, folks. There are more stories out there. Tom Delay is toast. Pennies do add up after awhile.
Bank on it.

Meanwhile -- can anybody from MI explain WTF Carl Levin thinks he's doing stripping rights from the Gitmo prisoners? Is he going Zell on us?
