You've heard the story. Legendary director extraordinaire Joss Whedon makes a brilliant series called Firefly that gets mangled by Fox. The series is a hit on DVD, and the groundswell of fans encourages Universal into make a big damn movie called Serenity. Universal itself encouraged guerilla marketing to promote the movie with contests on its own website for fanart, as did Joss Whedon.
Now that fandom is no longer useful, Universal is taking action to shut down guerilla marketers it once promoted.
