Saturday Night
May. 22nd, 2005 08:03 pmSaturday was the day of good movies. First there was HGTTG at noon, then off to a friend's for BBQ and geekiness. Of course the short always precedes the film, and today's was the latest fan produced classic trek episode, “In Harm's Way” which stars an Elvis impersonator named James Cawley as Captain Kirk. Check it out for free at www.newvoyages.com
Now to the other good movie of the day. House of Flying Daggers was one that I had heard rumors about. Now I wish I could have seen it on the big screen – as it is I'm thankful for my friend's projection TV and great stereo system. The film is visually stunning. Be prepared, this is not just a throw away kung fu movie. This is a solid love story akin to Hero.
Zhang Yimou (who also directed Hero) uses carefully chosen, manicured forests as sets, both in the Ukraine and in China. The colors are as sensual as the storyline. There is one scene toward the end set in a bamboo forest that is a million shades of green, that's it, just green, but what incredible green! The choreography, both fighting and dancing was as amazing as you would expect from this crew. Zhang never hurries, the pacing is poetic. Go ahead, watch it in Chinese – the language is too beautiful to miss and the subtitles aren't obtrusive. Most notably, this is a film where men and women are equally fighters and heroes. Refreshing!
