Personal Time
Oct. 4th, 2005 09:43 pmI have spoken before of my stepfather -- I really hate using that appellation because he is far more a father than my blood father ever was. I highly respect this man, not only because he treats my mother well, but because of his good works on behalf of all people. He has been battling cancer for about seven years now. It started with skin cancer, then progressed to prostate, then bone cancer. This last year has been long and painful for him.
So when my mom called today with a scared tremor in her voice, saying he was vomiting blood had to be taken to the hospital, I told my boss I had to go. My other sisters were busy or sick. I needed to be there.
The current hypothesis is that he has some cancerous lesions in his stomach that were attacked by the latest round of chemo. He's also on Coumadin, and his levels spiked. So he bled. They couldn't get a BP when he first got to the ER. He was still getting transfusions when I got there.
He's in ICU. He's fairly comfortable, though the meds they are giving him make his legs cramp. I'm praying that his pain lessens. He is fairly stable now. I'll go back to work tomorrow. Another sister will be there. They have my number.
