Return of the Turtle
Jan. 10th, 2007 08:42 pmWe are so used to hearing bad news about endangered species nowadays. Scientists estimate that as many as 50,000 species become extinct each year.
How precious and rare is it then, when we receive good news. A female river terrapin turtle, thought to be extinct in this part of the world, was found in a mangrove canal in Phang Nga Province in Thailand. Normally, a turtle such as this would have been eaten, but a villager with knowledge of conservation purchased it and alerted wildlife authorities. The turtle will be raised in captivity and eventually released.
