Author's Notes: This is a response/homage to [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes ficlet Broken and by no way implies that it is as good as that gem (go read it and pet her copiously!). I was simply inspired to write the dark side of her ficlet.

Excerpt: The war had exacted a toll on all its participants. The deepest scars appeared in the wee hours staring back in a darkened mirror.

"Unh!" Draco Malfoy managed to hold back the scream as he awoke from another war dream drenched in sweat. He managed to extract himself, shaking, from the bed without waking the sleeping form of Harry Potter and stumble to the tiny ensuite. The flat they shared sweltered in the midsummer humidity; their tiny fan incapable of moving enough air to make even a degree of difference.

Draco turned on the tap and wetted a cloth, running its coolness across his face and neck. It helped some, but he still gritted his teeth, grinning to hold back the wave of nausea that hit him in the wake of the horrendous images that still flooded his brain. The war had exacted a toll on all its participants. The deepest scars appeared in the wee hours staring back in a darkened mirror.

Draco clutched the edge of the sink and breathed deeply, willing his heartbeat to slow and his brain to return to his own control. He consciously lowered and attempted to relax his shoulders, hoping to occupy his mind. He reached for the cloth again, this time wiping not only his face but his arms, then steeled himself and went back to the bed.

He longed to lay in the arms of his lover, knowing that the simplicity of touch would drive the images away. So many times this scene had been repeated, so many times had they found solace in each other, knowing that the other understood the unspoken anguish. Draco lay down and rolled next to Harry, touching his shoulder.

Harry elbowed him away. "Hot," he murmured, peevishly.

Draco rolled onto his back. He briefly considered awakening Harry and explaining, then decided against it. Still shaking, he held himself, alone in the dreadful night.
