crazymaking
Jun. 28th, 2005 09:21 amWhen I was actively practicing, I lead a group for spouses of alcoholics and addicts. I recall one conversation about crazymaking. Crazymaking is where the addict or alcoholic keeps control by establishing rules but not telling you what they are ahead of time, then punishing you for breaking them. The first spouse said, "I remember the time I got reamed for parking the car wrong."
"You mean you parked in the wrong place?" someone asked.
"No," they replied, "I parked 2 inches too close to the left side of the carport so it wasn't centered. It looked wrong."
"I put the toilet paper on wrong once," said another.
"How do you do that?"
"He wants the flap to go on the outside, not in. So he beat me up!"
"I have the best one! I buttered the wrong side of the toast!"
"What! Which is the right side?" came the incredulous response.
"I never figured that out. But I got a black eye for it."
I always swore I'd leave such a relationship before it got that bad.
