Bye, Bye Buddha
Aug. 7th, 2007 10:27 pmThe Chinese government has declared that Tibet's living Buddhas must seek permission before reincarnating.
The Times Online reports that an order coming into effect Sept 1st declares that, “The so-called reincarnated living Buddha without government approval is illegal and invalid...”
It is aimed at preventing the "official" reincarnation of the 72-year-old Dalai Lama. The Chinese government has also banned anyone outside China from taking part in seeking and recognizing a living buddha.
This all seems ridiculous from the outside, taking into account that reincarnation isn't exactly within the control of even the most totalitarian regime. But this is all part of China's plan to break the hold the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism has over Tibet's remaining inhabitants.
And the list of human rights abuses grows even longer.
