Inherit the WIndbags
Sep. 26th, 2005 12:18 pmYou know me. I just can't resist weighing in on a hot button issue. The following is an open letter to the School Board of the Township of Dover, PA:
Dear Sir or Madame,
Recent coverage by the national press of your decision to teach that Evolution is merely a theory has reached even the farthest corners of the US. It appears that you are caring people, and are greatly concerned about the welfare of your young charges.
However, I feel it is my duty to point out that you are putting those same children at risk daily in every one of your facilities. I am aware that this mistake was probably due to some confusion; your own students will tell you that science is a hard subject sometimes. I feel certain that you will, upon notification, take care of this problem forthwith.
I am referring of course to the fact that Gravity is merely a theory. The confusion lies in the fact that both Newton and Kepler referred to their descriptions as laws, but really, under General Relativity, it is only a theory. As a responsible School Board, therefore, you should immediately take steps to install seat belts on all chairs in your facilities in case gravity fails and your students float up into space. I know the probability of such a thing happening is very low, but can you afford to take such a risk by believing a theory?
Thank you for your time and consideration in this very important matter.
