Please pass this message along to anyone, Democratic or Republican, who is in a vote-by-mail state or votes absentee. Watching the Gubernatorial Debate this evening, there was some important information passed on during the break. The State of Oregon has found that some black pens (usually Bic brand) have too much red ink to be read properly by optical scanners.
If you are voting a ballot to be read by an optical scanner, the best way to fill it out is to use a #2 pencil, just like you did at school. That way, if you make a mistake, you can erase it completely. If you must use a pen, use one with blue ink.
If you do make a mistake and can't remove the mark in a way that clearly shows your intention, call the Secretary of State's office and they will provide a new ballot.
Do not mail the ballot after Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 to ensure the ballot will arrive on time. Use the drop boxes after that time.
