Trip to Gamont, part 2

Wood Sorrel! Salad!

Mushroom. (No badgers)

I then tried to find Fall Creek Falls. I ended up on the wrong road, though. It was a lovely drive.

The road to/from Alsea Falls - one lane, with turnouts.

Ruffed Grouse

A replanted clearcut - about 3 years old.

I think this is Green Peak - but I'm not certain.

This is why they call it a clearcut. They rip out everything; the groundcovers, even the trees they're not harvesting. They pile what they don't want in heaps, then burn it all. This is what we don't want to see happening to the old-growth, intact forest in the wilderness areas targeted by the Bush Administration. Make sense now?

The sole surviving steam-powered lumber mill in Oregon. At Dawson.

So-called "tipi-burner" provides the steam.

Fresh lumber. This mill is the only one that can handle old growth logs. Newer mills are tooled to take only small logs. Notice the huge beams produced - a specialty of this mill.

So ends our journey. Thanks for coming along!
