Music and Memories

The other day I recieved a piece of music from a friend. Ashokan Farewell is a haunting fiddle tune that niggles at the brain and reminds one of many old fiddle tunes. It definitely struck a chord of memory in me.

I flew back in time to the summer after my high school graduation. Three young women, Rachel on the fiddle, Cornelia on the 12 string guitar, and me with my f-hole six string travelling Europe. We played in the Moscow Airport until the Red Guard made us stop. We played in West Berlin, but not East -- music was not allowed beyond the Wall. We played in Heidi's home of Apenzell, and in the Black Forest, even Leichtenstein. Pretty Mary, Bonaparte's Retreat, If I Had a Hammer... I can't recall our whole list.

I had to replace my f-hole on my return -- it got sprung on the airplane ride back. I still have the "new" guitar -- still steel strings, but round hole. I pulled him out of the closet, a couple years of dust accumulated on it. Wow, he plays better than ever! Have to get my callouses back...
