connections
It has been a bit of an eventful weekend and I hope that I will get the whole story out eventually. I am at my Mom's house using her internet connection right now. I have the strangest connection in the world, and it is down right now. It comes from the fact that the warthog is an expert in wireless communications. He has given talks all over the place about it. That's how we got to go to England a couple of years back; he had to give a talk at Cambridge as part of a conference.
When we moved into the house eleven years ago, we had dial-up. That got old after awhile, and we searched for something else. I didn't like cable because they kept taking away channels and charging more money. We decided on DSL, only to find out we didn't get DSL. Our friends who lived 4 blocks away, however, did. So the warthog fixed up a couple of antennae with radios and set up a wireless connection from their DSL and we split the cost. This is all quite legal (if it were cable -- it would not be). Our friends get a better connection and I get DSL. Since then, the phone co. has run fiber to our street and I could now get my own connection anytime I want to. If I keep the house, I may spring for it.
The funny thing is that the warthog is so security conscious, he would not allow wireless internet inside the house, so the entire house is wired. In each room, except the bathrooms there is a socket with two coax and two cat 5e. Plus, there are an additional two unterminated cat 5e and fiber lines in the wall. There are four total sockets in the living/dining room.... Talk about LAN party central!
The fly in the ointment? If the connection goes down on their end, they have to reset it. I can't do it from my end. Up until now, this hasn't been a problem. Unfortunately, this weekend, they are in Portland. Oops.
Now you know why you haven't heard from me. I'll catch you all up on more tidbits when I have my connection back Sunday night.
Till then, happy warthog hunting. remember: three to the body or one to the head.
